Stolen data on 200 million Twitter users now being given away

Twitter account information on 200 million users, including Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Donald Trump Jr., is now available for free on a hacker forum, according to security researchers.

The researchers at Privacy Affairs, a group of experts in several countries, say the data  comes from the same trove of information on 400 million Twitter users that was offered for sale on the dark web for US$200,000 in December.

This is not a new data leak, say the researchers, but the elimination of duplicate data from the cache put up for sale last month.

The data includes account name, handle, creation date, follower count, and email address. It also includes the accounts created by a number of organizations such as SpaceX, CBS Media and the National Basketball Association.

It doesn’t include passwords. Still, the researchers warn “the availability of the email addresses associated with the listed accounts could be used to determine the real-life identity or location of the affected account holders through social engineering attacks. The email addresses could also be used for spam or scam marketing campaigns and for sending personal threats to individual users.”

The hackers claim they got this data through scraping information collected by Twitter from its users. However, the researchers admit they aren’t sure how the data was obtained. The most likely method used could have been the abuse of an application programming interface (API) vulnerability.

Data scraping of Twitter isn’t new. All one has to do is a Google search of “Twitter scraping” to find tips and tools for doing it.

“The simple, structured format of Twitter and its various posting functions makes it relatively easy to navigate and scrape,” James Phoenix wrote last February for a site called Just Understanding DataThe Twitter API does allow users to read and write Twitter data, he added, noting, “Using the Twitter API instead of scraping Twitter data ensures compliance with Twitter’s terms of service, but it’s not as efficient or flexible as using scraping services.”

According to the Bleeping Computer news service, this new cache of data is not free, but costs a mere US$2.00.

Privacy Affairs says on the hacker forum where this data haul is being marketed, a user needs to purchase ‘credits’ to download leaks posted by forum users. The forum poster is offering the data for free; the forum, however, charges a credit (~$2) to initiate a download.

Bleeping Computer also notes that, since July 22, hackers have been selling and circulating large data sets of scraped Twitter user profiles containing both private (phone numbers and email addresses) and public data on various online hacker forums. These data sets were created in 2021 by exploiting a Twitter API vulnerability that allowed users to input email addresses and phone numbers to confirm whether they were associated with a Twitter ID. The threat actors then used another API to scrape the public Twitter data for the ID and combined this public data with private email addresses/phone numbers to create profiles of Twitter users.

Though Twitter fixed this flaw in January 2022, the news report says, threat actors have recently begun to leak the data sets they collected over a year ago for free.

Belkin to utilize recycled plastics in popular products

Belkin is refreshing its accessories lineup of power products by adding environmentally friendly materials to some of its bestsellers.

Popular wireless chargers, power banks, wall chargers, and car chargers will soon contain 73-75 percent post-consumer recycled plastics (PCR) and plastic-free packaging. PCR turns used plastic headed to landfills into new products.

The change will apply to the following products:

Magnetic Wireless Car Charger 10W
USB-C PD 3.0 PPS Wall Charger 25W
Dual USB-C PD Wall Charger 40W
PRO 4-Port GaN Charger 108W
PRO Dual USB-C GaN Wall Charger with PPS 45W
PRO Dual USB-C GaN Wall Charger with PPS 65W

The move is expected to save 7,000 metric tons of carbon emissions and reduce the products’ overall CO2-eq emissions by 67 percent.

The company says there will be “little difference” between its original products and those made with PCR.

Environmentally friendly products have become a trend in the industry. Apple has plans to make its entire product lineup carbon neutral by 203o. Several of its newer products, like the Apple Watch Ultra, are made with recycled materials.

Samsung has set a 2050 deadline to reach net zero emissions. Targeting its Device eXperience (DX) division first, the company says its working on a system that will reuse extracted minerals collected from waste batteries.

Tesla files trademark to make electric motors for boats and planes

Tesla has reportedly recently filed a trademark for producing electric motors for various modes of transportation, including airplanes and boats.

The trademark, which went largely unnoticed, was filed last week, and was reportedly filed under a “not for land vehicles” category, as reported by Electrek.

The definition of this category in the filing is somewhat unclear. Still, it does extend the company’s trademark on electric motors to “motors for airplanes,” “boat motors,” and “electric motors for toys.”

The trademark, as filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, reads the following:

TESLA™ trademark registration is intended to cover the categories of asynchronous motors not for land vehicles; Motors for airplanes; Motors, namely, synchronous motors not for land vehicles; Permanent magnet motors; Boat motors; Drive system having two or more synchronous motors coupled through clutches to drive a common load; Electric motors for toys; Linear motors.

Musk has said in the past that once manufacturers can improve battery energy density, planes and other non-land vehicles would also be able to operate off of a battery. However, they’re “still a bit too limited on range.” This was back in 2019. Four years later, the trademark filing doesn’t necessarily mean that Tesla is ready to develop electric planes and boats, but it is taking a step in the right direction.

It’s worth noting that completely electric boats already exist, while most battery-operated planes are still in prototype.

It could also just be that Tesla has filed the trademark to future-proof its plans, and that it doesn’t intend to do any development on “motors for airplanes,” “boat motors,” and “electric motors for toys” at the moment.

Play Store API update to help developers separate real users from bots

The world’s most used application store, Google’s Play Store, doesn’t just take the number one spot because of the Android market share but also because a majority of developers want to build games and applications for it.

The Play Store’s UI is not just user-friendly, but also intuitive for developers to manage their applications. As an added feature, Google is adding the ability for developers to distinguish real users from bots on its apps and games, as reported by Android Police.

Google announced the Play Integrity API for app developers at its annual I/O event in 2022. “The Play Integrity API helps protect your apps and games from potentially risky and fraudulent interactions, allowing you to respond with appropriate actions to reduce attacks and abuse such as fraud, cheating, and unauthorized access,” according to Google.

As part of the API, which is set to replace Google’s current ‘SafetyNet’ sometime in 2024, Play Store users would be categorized depending on their activity. The categories include: ACTIVITY_LEVEL_UNSPECIFIED, UNEVALUATED, UNUSUAL, UNKNOWN, TYPICAL_BASIC, and TYPICAL_STRONG.

Subsequently, Google Play will provide a signal that will help developers differentiate between “likely genuine” and “likely non-genuine” traffic on their apps and games.

Although this feature update serves no benefits to the end user, it does make help developers gauge the traffic on its apps, and is a constant reminder of the upgrades being added to the Play Integrity API. However, on the user front, Google is looking to place ads directly in the Play Store Search bar.

Leak showcases Google Pixel 7a in a quick hands-on video

A new leak showcases Pixel 7a in a 49-second hands-on video.

The video is in a awful resolution and looks pretty blurry, but it shows the Pixel 7a in all its square-shaped glory. The handset looks similar to the Pixel 6a, but in the device’s settings, it says Pixel 7a. The language is also set to Vietnamese, which is where Google manufactures its A series smartphones.

The handset now has the ‘Smooth Display’ feature giving it a refresh rate that can adjust from 60Hz to 90Hz, which I found was a significant downside to the Pixel 6a.

According to a Pixel roadmap shared by Android Authority, the Pixel 7a is planned to launch in May alongside the Pixel Fold. However, another leak suggests the Fold won’t arrive until later this year. The Pixel 7a is expected to cost as much as the Pixel 6a, so we should expect a $599 price in Canada.

Rumours indicate the Pixel 7a will sport Sony’s IMX787 and IMX712 camera sensors alongside wireless charging.

Unfortunately, the video is only available on SlashLeaks, which you can check out here.

LG’s 97-inch M3 TV fulfills the totally wireless TV dream

Television wires undeniably suck.

Some companies, like Samsung, have come up with inventive solutions like The Frame’s TV One Connect Box that allows you to plug devices directly into it instead of the television (the box still needs to be plugged in), but the dream has always been an entirely wireless setup.

While it still hasn’t been proven in the real world, LG’s 97-inch M3 TV seems like a near-true fulfillment of the wireless TV dream. LG says it’s the first company to support ‘Zero Connect’ wireless video and audio transmission, allowing you to plug your devices into a large external box to wirelessly send a 4K 120Hz picture from up to 9.1m (30ft) away.

To be clear, there’s still a box with unsightly wires coming out of it, but in theory, the actual M3 TV is entirely wire-free apart from its power cable, which is cleverly hidden in its stand. Along with clearing away cord clutter, this makes it possible to place the TV nearly anywhere in your home, freeing it from the shackles of cables (at least for the most part).

No other details about the M3 were revealed, including pricing and availability. However, expect the TV and its experimental technology to cost a significant amount of cash.

Not to be outdone by the television giant, a company called Displace TV showed off the world’s first totally wireless, battery-powered TV at CES 2023. Will it ever get a commercial release, though? Probably not.

For a look at all of LG’s new TVs for 2023, follow this link.
