Universal Studios U.S. Super Nintendo World theme park opens on February 17

If you’ve been eagerly awaiting the opening of Universal Studios Hollywood Super Nintendo World, you’ll be happy to know that the theme park will officially open on February 17th, 2023.

Similar to the Japan-located Super Nintendo World, this U.S. version of the park is a self-contained area at Universal Studios. The timing of the theme park’s opening isn’t surprising, given The Super Mario Bros. Movie hits theatres on April 7th, 2023.

Similar to the Japanese version of the theme park, Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, an augmented reality (AR) experience that overlays a digital experience on a real track, is the main attraction. Unfortunately, this will be the only Super Nintendo World ride available when the park opens. The Japanese version of the park also offers a ride called Yoshi’s Adventure. It’s currently unclear if this ride is also coming to the U.S. version of Super Nintendo World.

Just like the Japanese version of the park, Universal Studios Hollywood’s Super Nintendo World allows attendees to use a ‘Power-Up Band’ to interact with real-world question mark blocks and characters. There’s also Toadstool Cafe, a restaurant that serves Mario-themed food like the ‘Piranha Plan Caprese’ and the aptly named ‘Mario Bacon Cheese Burger.’

A second U.S-based Super Nintendo World is scheduled to open at Universal Studios Florida in the future.

Global market for low code technologies expected to grow 20 per cent in 2023: Gartner

According to Gartner Inc., the worldwide market for low code development technologies is forecast to total US$26.9 billion in 2023, representing an increase of 19.6 per cent from 2022.

A rise in business technologists, enterprise-wide automated work processes and composable business initiatives following growing demands for optimized customer experience, plus economic pressures, and high cost of tech talent, are reported to be driving the fast adoption of low code technologies.

“Equipping both professional IT developers and non-IT personas — business technologists — with diverse low-code tools enables organizations to reach the level of digital competency and speed of delivery required for the modern agile environment.” said Varsha Mehta, senior market research specialist at Gartner.

Low-code application platforms (LCAPs) are projected to be the largest component of the low-code development technology market, growing 25 per cent to reach nearly US$10 billion in 2023.

Citizen automation development platforms (CADP) are projected to grow at the fastest pace, with a 30.2 per cent growth forecast for 2023. CADP typically includes automating workflows, building web-based forms, bridging data and content across multiple software-as-a-service applications, and creating reports and data visualizations.

Gartner also predicts that, by 2026, developers outside formal IT (information technology) departments will account for at least 80 per cent of the user base for low-code development tools, up from 60 per cent in 2021.

Global government IT spending to exceed $580 billion in 2023: Gartner

In 2023, worldwide government spending will increase by 6.8 per cent over 2022, with a total budget of US$588.9 billion, Gartner Inc. predicts, as governments look to develop a cohesive total experience framework (TX) strategy in order improve delivery of services as well as citizen experience and engagement.

Constituents are demanding experiences similar to online consumer interactions, and that will be one of the principal drivers of government IT spend in 2023, Daniel Snyder, director analyst at Gartner explained.

The TX plan will be geared towards better data use, digital transformation and modernization of legacy systems, Gartner reports. Government spending will hence increase across all IT segments, the highest being in software, forecast to include initiatives such as migrating services to the cloud, modernizing applications, and bolstering network security.

In contrast, spending on their end-users will be limited, as governments will consider extending the life of devices acquired at the onset of the pandemic.

The TX strategy will also focus on advancing the digital skills and literacy of workforces by providing technology upgrades, designed to reduce friction and toil in government work.

“At the same time, chief information officers (CIOs) will have to tackle challenges such as varying stakeholder expectations and developing action plans accordingly.” said Apeksha Kaushik, principal analyst at Gartner. “Government CIOs will need to address concerns of digital transformation with mission objectives. They need to work closely with government executives to ensure a shared understanding of vision, roadmap and linkage to mission critical priorities.”

Ontario invests $20 million in MRI services

TORONTO – The Ontario government is investing over $20 million in operating funding to support the addition of 27 new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines in hospitals across Ontario. “The Ontario Association of Radiologists welcomes the government’s investment announcement of operational funding for new MRI scanners across Ontario,” said Dr. David Jacobs (pictured), president, Ontario Association of Radiologists. MRI is central to the detection and management of diseases, including cancer, strokes, and cardiac disease.

As a result of this investment, some small and rural community hospitals will now be able to operate their very first MRI machine. For people in these communities, it means they will have more convenient access to diagnostic imaging and no longer need to travel to receive an MRI scan.

This funding will also support additional MRI machines in hospitals in high-population growth areas with increased demand for MRI services. With more MRI services throughout the province, patients can be diagnosed faster and if needed, begin treatment and follow-up care even sooner.

Moreover, this funding brings the total investment in operational funding for new MRI machines to $40 million, increasing the government’s 2021-22 commitment to invest $30 million by an additional $10 million to help hospitals increase MRI capacity and services. In total, the province is providing operational funding for 49 new MRI machines in 42 hospitals across the province.

As part of its Plan to Stay Open: Health System Stability and Recovery, through the Surgical Recovery Strategy, the government is adding more than 150,000 one-time additional operating hours in 2022-23 for hospital-based MRI and CT machines, ensuring better and more equitable access to diagnostic imaging services.

The Ontario government is investing over $300 million in 2022-23 as part of the province’s surgical recovery strategy, bringing the total investment to approximately $880 million over the last three fiscal years.

“Our government is ensuring hospitals across the province have the funds they need to operate their new MRI machines and increase access to diagnostic imaging for people in their communities,” said Sylvia Jones, deputy premier and minister of health. “For some communities, this funding means they will have their first-ever MRI machine and residents will have more convenient access to care closer to home.”

Two charged in vaccine-system data breach

TORONTO – Hundreds of thousands of Ontarians’ information may have been compromised in a data breach of the province’s vaccine management system last year. Beginning this month, some 360,000 people will receive notices that their personal information was part of the November 2021 data breach of the COVAXX system, the Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery said in a statement.

The ministry said it had been working with the Ministry of Health, police and Ontario’s privacy commissioner to determine the scale and impact of the breach. The ministry’s statement does not say how it occurred.

Two people were charged in connection with the breach last year.

One of the accused, a 21-year-old who lives in Ottawa’s Gloucester area, was an employee of the vaccine contact centre, part of the Ontario Ministry of Government and Consumer Services, Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release last year.

The other was a 22-year-old man from Vaudreuil-Dorion, Que. Both have been charged with unauthorized use of a computer.

Police said at the time that the provincial government received reports of spam text messages from several individuals who had scheduled their vaccine appointments, or accessed their vaccine certificates, through the provincial booking system.

Those “fraudulent spam” texts asked people for their personal information, said OPP spokesperson Bill Dickson.

In its statement, the ministry said in over 95 percent of the cases, “only names and/or phone numbers were impacted.”

The statement says the vaccine booking system is “regularly monitored and tested” through the Ministry of Health’s cyber security protocols, and that the province is “confident” the system remains a secure tool.
